Success Stories – Glen & Supna
CrossFit & Marriage
by Supna AlisWe have been married for over 13 years. We are holistic doctors and run a wellness center. We lead a healthy lifestyle. We eat organic, real food. We exercise. We are positive thinkers. We have been blessed to help others do the same. This is what we have in common. Other than that, we are very different people. One of the main differences is our athletic ability. Glen can play any sport and he’s good at it! I am not athletic. I never have been. I’ve tried, but I was never good, nor did I enjoy it. I just wanted to go to the gym and do my thing there.
Before CrossFit, Glen had run 8 marathons and over 50 half marathons. He plays basketball twice a week in leagues. He did Pilates for 7 years and Yoga for about a year.
About 3 years ago, a patient came in and asked Glen to try CrossFit. They were doing it in a garage run by Annie Berryhill. He thought he was in good shape, but those workouts kicked his butt. He would be laid out for hours after the workout until he had to go to work. He went back for more. He had a lot of fun.
With our healthy lifestyle, it was only natural that CrossFit would find us. Glen started going when I was pregnant. He loved it immediately, but I did not! I resented that he was gone early in the morning to workout. This is when I needed him most with little kids at home. Then I loved that he went. I found it made him a better husband and dad. Plus he looked amazing! He’s been doing CrossFit for 3 years and he’s addicted… addicted in a good way. As his wife, I’ve seen incredible changes in him. Yes….he looks the best he’s ever looked. He actually looks younger now than when I married him 13 years ago! But more importantly than that, it’s helped him to become a better person. He’s more driven. He’s more motivated. He’s more dedicated. He’s more patient. He’s more loving and passionate.
With a little push from Glen, I decided to give it a shot about 7 months ago. I hated it. I really hated it. I came home from the WODs in pain. So much pain that I couldn’t even play with my boys. I gained weight. My muscles were so swollen from all the squats. My pants didn’t fit me anymore. I was frustrated…very frustrated. But I didn’t want to give up. Thank God for all the amazing women in my box. I talked to them about what I was going through and they reassured me that it will all pass. I believed them. About four months into it, I found myself loving it! Even though I was in pain and even though I was swollen…I loved it.
I loved that it was something Glen and I could do together. We finally had something in common that we could share our excitement about, other than our work and our kids. I loved that he would get excited for me when I did ONE double under, or if I lifted just a little heavier. I loved that we can share this lifestyle with our boys. They’re 5 and 2 and know what muscle ups and burpees are….and they can do them! I love that we feel like we have a family where we work out. It’s not like any other gym. You go, you work out, and you come home. You may never see the same face there. CrossFit allows you to become part of a community, part of a family. Everyone is there to encourage you and support you. There’s no judgment or criticism….only love.
I’ve learned that CrossFit is not about being the strongest or fastest. It’s about showing up, giving it your all, and encouraging others to do the same. It has also taught us mental toughness and persistence. I love that this is part of our lifestyle and part of who we are as a couple. I am so thankful that we found CrossFit, and especially Ruination. I feel like our marriage is stronger and we support each other even more now than ever before! On a side note: I am no longer in pain every day, the swelling in my muscles has come down, and I’m starting to lose weight/gain more muscle. Those ladies were right!
